PhD Candidate on Implementation of Large-Scale Health Information Systems job with NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – NTNU

About the position

We have a vacancy for a position as a PhD candidate on implementation of large-scale health information systems.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The appointment is for a term of 4 years, with 25% dedicated to teaching. This is a position aimed at providing an ambitious Phd the opportunity of academic maturing and productivity.

The position is connected to the ongoing project realizing the shared electronic health record: a multi-site study of a region-wide implementation (REAL) and the PhD candidate is expected to contribute to deliverables in this project.

The research in REAL is in the intersection of:

  • Organizational Science: Focus is on organizational change and change management (endringsledelse).
  • Health Informatics: The discipline of health informatics contributes with insights on how health information technology and clinical practice affect each other, how users can be involved in the development and implementation of new technologies, and how these technologies can best be implemented.
  • Implementation Science: Implementation science studies the implementation of interventions (such as information systems) in clinical practice. Studies have identified drivers and barriers for successful implementation, and frameworks like CFIR and NASSS identify domains that require attention in implementation projects.

Qualitative methods, such as case studies, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations, will be used to conduct the research.

The PhD project will examine how the implementation of a shared electronic health record (EHR) in Central Norway is planned, organized, and executed in different contexts (different hospitals, different departments, community care, etc.) The research will identify barriers and drivers for successful implementation in the different settings studied. And it will use the findings to contribute to published theories and frameworks on implementation. The position does NOT involve technology development.

The research contained in this position must be aligned with the overall goals of the REAL project. The PhD is expected to cooperate with the other members of the project to conduct empirical research and disseminate the results in high-quality outlets selected in cooperation with project team members.

You will report to Head of Department.
